Windows 98 Configuration Guide
DISCLAIMER:
This guide is for advanced and confident PineyNet Network
Services customers that are wanting to use many different
Windows 98 Internet applications.
For example, the guide requires that you know how to navigate
Windows, and use the Windows Explorer. The instructions are
quite clear and if you find yourself unable to follow them
successfully, then you should not attempt this procedure.
Also, you might want to print this guide for easy installation and
configuration.
Windows 98 provides all the functionality you will need to get up
and going on the Internet. The Dial-up Networking feature of
Windows 98 works seamlessly with PineyNet's network setup.
We’ve included detailed instructions and screen snap-shots to
simplify things.
1.Click the "Start" button on the Windows 98 taskbar.
2.Select "Programs", "Accessories", and the
"Communications".
3.Make sure that you have the Dial-Up Network option
listed.
If it is not listed, then it is possible that Dial-up Networking
option was not installed initially with Windows 98. Therefore,
you’ll need to continue to the section entitled "Installing
Dial-Up Networking."
If "Dial-up Networking" is installed on your computer, skip to
the section entitled "Configuring Dial-up Networking."
Installing Dial-up Networking:
1.Click "Start" on the taskbar.
2.Select the "Settings" menu and click on "Control Panel."
This will bring up a window of icons.
3.Double Click "Add/Remove Programs" from the list of
icons.
4.Click the "Windows Setup" tab at the top of the dialog
box.
5.A list of items will appear with check boxes out beside
them.
6.Click on "Communication"
7.Click on "Details" and select "Dial-up Networking".
8.Click the check box associated with Dial-Up Networking.
9.Click on "OK".
10.You may need your Windows 98 CD or diskettes to
install these packages.
11.Once you have done this, you may be prompted for a
workgroup name and username.
12.The workgroup name will be "PineyNet" and you’ll need to
enter your username in all lowercase in the username area.
13.Restart the computer if prompted.
14.Now, you should have the "Dial-up Networking" option
available under "Accessories".
You are now ready to configure Dial-up Networking for use
with PineyNet!
Configuring Dial-up Networking:
1.Click on "Start" on the Windows 98 taskbar.
2.Click on "Programs", "Accessories", and then "Communications".
3.Select "Dial-up Networking".
4.If you’ve never been on the Internet, the Windows 98 Internet Setup
Wizard should guide you through the initial configuration.
5.If the Setup Wizard doesn’t activate, simply double click on "Make
New Connection" icon.
6.For the name of the computer you are dialing, enter "PineyNet" Click on
"Next".
7.Select a modem from the list that corresponds to the modem in your
computer. It is probably already correct. Click on "Next".
8.Enter the modem number that is appropriate for your calling location.
Click on "Finish"
9.Once the wizard is complete, you should now have a window open on
your screen called "Dial-up Networking" that contains an icon named
"PineyNet". Configuration is almost complete.
10.Highlight the "PineyNet" icon by clicking on it once. Then, go to "File" on
the title bar and select "Properties."
11.Enter the modem number that is appropriate for your calling location
(for Telephone Number):
West Monroe, Louisiana ------338-7940
Ruston, Louisiana ------ 255-8939
Winnfield, Louisiana ------ 628-4459
Arcadia, Louisiana ----------- 263-9783
Saline, Louisiana --- 576-3606

11.Now, at this dialog box , click on "Server type"
12.Make sure that the "Type of Dial-up Server" listed begins with
"PPP:". If not, bring down the list of available servers and select it.
13.Uncheck the "Log on to network" option. (See above diagram.)
14.For "Allowed Network Protocols," uncheck NetBEUI, and
IPX/SPX.
15.Only TCP/IP need be selected under allowed network protocols. See
above diagram.
16.Now , click on the "TCP/IP Settings" button.
17.At the "TCP/IP Settings" dialog box, the "Server assigned IP
address" box should be selected.
18.Make sure that "Server assigned name server addresses" box is
selected.
19.Select "Use IP header compression" and "Use default gateway on
remote network" if they are not already selected. (See following
diagram.)
Click on "OK" for each window until you return to the desktop. We’re
almost finished!
Configuring your Network in Windows 98
1.Click on "Start" on the taskbar.
2.Select "Settings" and "Control Panel".
3.Double-click on the "Network" icon.
4.Select "Add...", "Protocol", and click on "Add...".
5.Choose "Microsoft" and "TCP/IP", then select "OK".
6.Make sure that TCP/IP is only added once.
7.Your "Network Configuration" should look like the following:
8.Double check that TCP/IP has been added only one time.
NOTE: If you are on a Local Area Network, your configuration will
not be the same just make sure that TCP/IP is listed only once for the
Dial-Up adapter.
Dial-up Networking is now configured!
9.Click on "OK" until you are back at the "Control Panel".
10.You may be prompted to restart your computer. If given this
option, click on "OK" to restart your system.
Connecting to PineyNet with Windows 98
1.Double click on "My Computer"
2.Double click on the "Dial-up Networking" folder.
3.To connect to PineyNet, just double click the "PineyNet" icon. (You
might want to create a shortcut on the desktop to
PineyNet.)
4.Enter your username and password in all lowercase in the
appropriate spaces. Please do not enter your e-mail address by
accident-- just enter your username and then your password.
5.Click on "Connect" to login to the Internet.
After you're connected a status window will display "Logging into
network", then the timer will begin. Minimize this connection timer box
if necessary.
You’ve successfully logged into the Internet with
PineyNet Network
Services!
Now, you may run any Windows 98 Internet application that you have
installed. For example, to run Netscape Navigator, click on "Start",
"Programs", and then "Netscape Navigator". You're ready to
explore the Internet!
When you are finished, exit Netscape and maxamize the Windows 98
dialer and select "Disconnect".
